The beginning of a new year provides a fresh start or new slate for us. It’s a time to think about the possibilities of what could happen this next year. It’s a time to reset, refocus and recommit.
About 40-45% of Americans set some type of New Year’s resolution, some goal to achieve something in their lives. There’s tons of content out there on how to set goals and research related to goal setting. It’s a really good thing to do, but this year I want to challenge you to think about something a little bit different.
A BHAG is a Big, Hairy, Audacious Goal. This is something that stretches you beyond yourself, something that will be fun, challenging and worthwhile. The concept comes from Jim Collin’s book Good to Great, but the principles apply to all aspects of our lives.
Jim Collins puts it this way, “A true BHAG is clear and compelling, serves as unifying focal point of effort, and acts as a clear catalyst.”
This BHAG can be anything you want to accomplish or experience in 2012, but it has to fit the following criteria:
1.) It has to be BIG and HAIRY: This goal has to push you out of your comfort zone. It can’t be something you are comfortable doing, but should stretch you and challenge you. These are things you’ve dreamed of doing but never go around to or had the courage to run after.
2.) It has to be AUDACIOUS: Make it fun. Make it bold. Step outside yourself and do the things you’ve always dreamed of doing or wanted to do. Step outside yourself and your comfort zone and you might be surprised by what you learn about yourself. Dream big.
One of my BHAG’s for 2012 is to race in a half triathlon. This fits into the above criteria because anything that requires 1.2 miles swimming, 56 miles biking and 13.1 miles running would not fall into what I consider my comfort zone. This is definitely big, hairy and audacious for me.
Go ahead and start thinking about your BHAG now in preparation for the new years. There’s never a better time than now to do it.
